It is beautifully written and honest as Taya details meeting Chris, their lives together, her life after Chris and everything in between.
If you’ve read American Sniper, or even if you haven’t, American Wife is a genuine story of love, loss and life. It will tug at your heartstrings from start to finish and show a side of Chris Kyle you’ve never seen or heard before.
What I loved: I was completely moved by Chris’ story while reading American Sniper and then by watching the motion picture adaptation directed by Clint Eastwood. It was only natural, I would want to read Taya’s book and have the story come full circle.
When I found out Taya had narrated the book, I purchased it from Audible instantly.
Without hesitation, I began listening to Taya re-live the best and worst moments of her life. She is honest, down to earth and an incredibly strong woman. She even likes Harry Potter! The story is intensely gripping and you won’t be able to put it down or stop listening.
The book was an emotional roller-coaster, that’s for sure. At times, I couldn’t help but smile, others, I had chills and tears running down my face. Certain parts left me feeling like I had been punched in the stomach. I could only imagine how Taya had felt.
Taya provides another side of Chris not shown in his book or the movie, which makes his death even more of an absolute tragedy.
After reading American Wife, I can say without hesitation, Taya is now one of my role models. She is intelligent, honest, pure, gorgeous, a wonderful mother and was a loving wife. If I could be half the woman she is, I’d be happy. Even during her darkest days, she tried her best to stay strong and endure.
What I didn’t: The only reason my rating is a 9.5 instead of a 10, is because I would have liked to have learned a little more about Taya as a person, and not just as Chris Kyle’s wife. I wanted to learn more about her childhood and growing up, however, throughout the book, you do get a sense of who she truly is at heart.
What I loved about listening: I can honestly say, after listening to Taya narrate her own book, there is no other way to absorb the story. Hearing the book in her own words, literally, made the experience that much more realistic and amazingly touching.
She is able to tell her story in a calm, but moving manner and at times, it feels like Taya was right next to me, gossiping like one of my closest girlfriends. She shares many sweet moments with Chris and some horrible gut-wrenching memories too, but no matter what, her voice is steady, and let’s the story speak for itself.
What I didn’t love about listening: There is nothing I didn’t love about listening. Taya did an incredible job narrating.
