Overview: Angsty teen, Lex, short for Lexington, is about to be expelled from school. She's a bully and causes trouble any where she can find it. She is the outcast in her family and in school until her Uncle Mort offers to take Lex for the summer to straighten her out.
What Lex doesn't know is once she gets to Croak, she will be given a job she never knew she wanted, but would kill to keep, pun intended.
I loved the new and original spin of grim reaper lore. It's also exciting to explore a new literary world, especially one like Croak. And let me tell you, the world within Croak is wildly vibrant despite the grim atmosphere.... Okay, okay, I'll stop with the death puns, for now.
I thoroughly enjoyed all of the characters, plot twists and story. The book is a very easy read and I had trouble putting it down.
Gina Damico's writing is also very intelligent and includes fantastic vocabulary.
There is an underlying theme of teen sexuality , but it's very subtle and doesn't take over story as much as other YA novels.
The Croak series is a trilogy, so stay tuned for my reviews of Books 2 and 3!
What I didn't: As unique and creative as some of the characters were in Croak, I often had time trying to remember all of their names and who was who. The names are strange to say the least.
