Overview: Anita Moorjani, a Hindu woman living in Hong Kong, is diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. As her body begins to deteriorate and is overcome with cancerous cells, Anita succumbs to a coma and begins the greatest journey of her life.
Dying to Be Me is a memoir about life, death, love, healing and existence.
What I loved: Even though, essentially, this novel isn't one of my favorites, as a reader, I could tell it was written with passion and dedication. Anita has a strong and commanding voice which brings her story to life. She does a great job of explaining her journey with many details, anecdotes and life lessons. If you've ever wondered about Near-Death-Experiences, this would be a good place to start learning about what such an event entails.
What I didn't: I had downloaded this book almost immediately after reading When Breath Becomes Air in hopes it would be similar. Unfortunately, these two books are nothing alike. The memoir appears to be largely about Anita's Near-Death-Experience (NDE), but in fact, I felt the book focused more on her life before and after this experience, not during. I wanted more guts and juice about her time being sick, metaphorically of course. I also felt like it was missing something that I just can't put my finger on. Ultimately, if you liked When Breath Becomes Air and watch medical shows like ER or Grey's, this memoir is probably not for you.
What I loved about listening: I always appreciate when an author also narrates their book. I think this adds more validity to the story and peeks my interest as opposed to a random performer taking on the title.
What I didn't love about listening: I've listened to many audiobooks and for some reason, the quality of this one seemed a little off. At times, Anita sounded muffled and echoey like she was recording in a large empty room. Besides the audio quality itself though, Anita did a very good job with her pace and cadence.
