Let's face it; Election 2016 is a shit show. In my eyes, it seems both major party candidates are running smear campaigns instead of political campaigns.
You can't escape election coverage either. It's on TV, the radio, in the papers, and all over social media. Because of the extensive coverage, many of us are seeing, some for the first time, what exactly our friends and families truly believe in. I've seen more nasty fights online than actual adult conversations too. And everyone and their mother has an opinion about something or other.
I'm not going to actually delve into the politics or my personal beliefs, but I will say I'm incredibly disappointed with the belief systems of some of my favorite authors.
Not very often, but sometimes, as a reader, we are lucky enough to come across a book or memoir which speaks to us on such a deeply personal level, it shakes us to our core. I can think of at least 5 female authors which have done exactly that.
I connected to their stories so closely, I felt like I had known them my whole life. I held these authors in the highest esteem possible and they are positioned on very steep pedestals in my eyes. I live by their quotes and would even consider putting a handful of them permanently on my body. In fact, I have at least two tattoos already on my body by some of these exact authors.
However, I've come to learn more about these women during this election and I have to say, they have fallen off their pedestals. Some things I've seen them tweet or post has completely shattered and tainted my view of them. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I always hoped these women and I would share the same political opinions as views on life.
I feel these authors are incredibly intelligent and wise, so it has shocked me to learn what kind of leader they feel is fit to run our country.
How does one cope with feeling disappointed with their favorite author? Is it possible to look past that? I am struggling to continue respect my favorite authors, because they have changed my life, but I no longer feel as though I can relate to them. Maybe I should un-follow them from all social media to salvage what little connection we may have left?
Have you ever, or are you feeling the same during this election? Has one of your idols let you down in one way or another? If so, tell me in the comments section below.
