Stelmach is very descriptive with his writing and provides a solid foundation for the plot with the italicized flashbacks of Nadia’s childhood. Nadia is a very relatable character and you voluntarily join her on her journey for justice.
What’s even more interesting about The Altar Girl are the historical references about World War II and the Ukrainian Displaced Persons camps post-war. At first, I wasn’t sure if the history was accurate, but the Acknowledgements explain and verify the history to be true.
What I didn’t: Due to the fact that The Altar Girl is a prequel, that happened to be written after the other books in the series, I felt that at some points I had either missed important facts or pieces of information. I think if I would have read the other books in the series and THEN read the prequel, I wouldn’t have felt the occasional instance of confusion.
