I have always loved J.K. Rowling ever since I first picked up Harry Potter when I was ten years old. However, I feel like for the first time, I disagree with her regarding a very important subject: the new Hermione Granger.
In a recent article, J.K. calls out people for being "racist" regarding the casting of Hermione for the up-coming play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
I don't understand why someone has to be considered a racist to be upset about the casting of The Cursed Child?
It's also uncalled for that Rowling would insult her fans as such, considering her millions of dollars come from her loyal fans. Sure, if someone is actually being racist and derogatory, that's one thing, but for someone to simply disagree with the casting, that's totally different.
I'm sure this post will bring a lot of heat towards me, but that's okay. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and here's mine....
For over half of my life, Hermione Granger has been Emma Watson to me. I grew up with Emma Watson as my Hermione and that's how I will always see the character.
Now, I'm sure Noma Dumezweni is an incredible actress and could admirably portray Hermione in The Cursed Child, otherwise she wouldn't have been cast, but she is not Hermione to me.
Sure, Rowling never actually specified Hermione's race in the books, but she took part in casting Emma Watson as the brainy muggle-born we all know and love.
Even in the book illustrations, Emma Watson's features are comparable to how Hermione is drawn.
Just because some fans want to see a woman resembling Emma Watson as our "new" Hermione, doesn't make us racist. It's just our personal belief and expectation.
When you give us 8 films of a certain cast, it's only natural to expect a similar cast going forward. Sometimes, change is good, and others, it's unnecessary.
Now, if Dean Thomas was portrayed as Asian in The Cursed Child, I'd be just as disappointed. If Cho was Spanish, yes I'd be disappointed too. I would be disappointed by ANY drastic change to the casting, no matter which race, character or appearance had changed.
Call me racist if you want, but I'm just a lifelong Potterhead wishing for a grown up Emma Watson to play Hermione, as I believe she portrayed her absolutely perfectly in the films.
And just for kicks, the Harry Potter wiki describes Rose Weasley, Ron and Hermiones's daughter as having, "... long red hair and blue eyes which are from her paternal family. "
Despite my disappointment, I will still support The Cursed Child and I'll still purchase the script. And if Noma ends up knocking it out of the park as Hermione, I'll support her too. But, nothing and no one can stop me from always picturing Emma as Hermione.
