If everyone could find the right book(s) for them, the world would be a much happier place, or at least a more well-read place.
So, if you want to start reading more, here are the best habits to acquire...
#1- Find out what interests you
Do you enjoy mystery, biographies, sports, fiction, non-fiction, comedy, poetry, romance etc? Think about what you love and find a book in that genre. It's so much easier to absorb content, if you are genuinely interested in the topic. To find the best books of a certain genre, click here!
#2- Choose the best medium for you
Today, there are so different ways to read. Whether you choose a Kindle, Nook, iPad, your phone or an actual book, you will always have a variety of choices. Personally, I like to go back and forth by reading a physical book then an e-book on my iPad and so on. Once you figure out which medium works for you, it's much easier to stay focused and entertained.
#3- Be aware of book sales and promotions
I tend to read a lot more, when I have more books to read, common sense right? Well, full-price books can get pretty pricey, especially hardcover books. That's why I make sure to always look for a sale. Recently, I started purchasing new or used books on Amazon. I've gotten a few books for only $0.01 plus $3.99 shipping! I've saved so much money by purchasing a used book, than buying brand new. Also, if you're an Amazon Prime member, you're eligible for at least one free book a month with the Kindle First program. Or, if you join Kindle Unlimited, you can read books for free with your monthly membership. Another site I found recently, BookBub, shows books you can purchase for a discounted rate as well!
#4- Set aside a little time every day to read
Sometimes, the hardest part about reading is finding the time to sit back, relax and open the first chapter. We all have busy lives with families, jobs, appointments, hobbies and so much more. The good news is, is there are 24 hours in a day and if you schedule a reading time in advance, you won't feel so overwhelmed later. I try to read a few chapters on lunch breaks or before bed. Or, you can always enjoy the outdoors AND your book by reading in your backyard, at a park, or on the beach. I also have been listening to books via Audible which is perfect for the ride to and from work. Put a reminder in your phone and schedule a little "me" time with your new book.
#5 Find a reading buddy
I find reading is much more exhilarating when you have a friend to share the experience with. There's nothing better than finishing a great book and being able to discuss it with someone else. You can also challenge each other if you're reading the same book simultaneously. Who can finish first?!
#6 Challenge yourself
If you're a competitive person like myself, then you understand the need to win or accomplish a difficult goal. This year, I'm staying motivated to read by following my 50 Book Reading Challenge. You can also set-up a reading challenge on Goodreads. This site/app will tell you how many books you're ahead or behind and give you your % completed. Set a goal and challenge yourself right now!
#7 Follow my blog
Last, but not least, if you'd like to become an avid reader, follow my blog! I write many spoiler-free book reviews featuring a variety of genres. You can also request a book to be reviewed before you take the plunge and purchase it for yourself.
Reading is a great habit to have. I have been reading regularly since I was very young and can't even begin to describe how much it has positively impacted me. My vocabulary is fairly extensive and I have knowledge I may not have learned in school. I also have a means of escape if I need a quick get-a-way. I encourage all of you to follow the above steps and expand your mind with a new book today!
