Overview: Alice Love, a resident of Sydney, Australia, suffers a freak accident at the gym causing her memories from the previous decade to vanish.
She has no memory of her three children or her eminent divorce. Can Alice regain her memory in time to save her marriage? Or, will she need to start a new life and create new memories?
What I loved: I absolutely adore Liane Moriarty, the author. I read her book, Big Little Lies, and fell in love with her style of storytelling. The opening chapters are a perfect example of Mortiarty's talent of drawing in her readers with beautiful imagery and dialogue.
Following Alice's journey through the tragedy of losing her memory to the point when some memories do come back was so mysteriously delightful. What Alice Forgot is more than just a book about a woman who loses her memory, it's about life, love, family, marriage, parenthood, friendship, second chances and so much more.
What I didn't: As much as I loved Alice's story of trying to regain her memory, I felt her sister, Elizabeth's story was actually much more appealing. Elizabeth's struggle, in my opinion, is much more haunting and I thoroughly enjoyed her sporadic chapters and even think she could have had her own book. Or, I would have been happy with half the book be from Alice's perspective and the other half be from Elizabeth's.
However, even though Alice is technically the main character of the book, I felt both her and her sister had existential awakenings, and it was all worth it in the end to follow both journeys.
What I loved About Listening: The narrator, Tamara Lovatt-Smith, has the most amazing Australian accent. I could honestly listen to her read her grocery list. She did an amazing job narrating the book, and I especially loved her changes in tone and pitch to accommodate the voices of Alice's three young children.
What I didn't Love About Listening: As much as I loved the narrator, it took me a while to get used to the fact that she was narrating for ALL of the characters. Sometimes, it was hard to remember if Alice, Elizabeth or someone else was speaking.
FYI, What Alice Forgot is supposedly being adapted to the big screen with Jennifer Aniston rumored to play Alice!
